Perhaps more widely known as the hometown of President Harry S. Truman and starting point for some of the more famous pioneer trails, Independence, Missouri is also a popular place for…puppeteers? Located in the Independence Art District of Englewood, the Puppetry Arts Institute opened in 2001 with the goal of preserving and promoting puppetry through educational programs and entertainment for people of all ages.
A Lost Art
In addition to hosting shows performed by some of the best local, national, and international puppeteers, the facility also houses a museum featuring the art of famous puppeteer Robert Leroy Smith, Hazelle puppets and memorabilia, and puppets from around the world. The Institute also offers a several workshops for children, families, and school groups, and also hosts birthday parties. Open Tuesday through Saturday, the Puppetry Art Institute is certainly a quirky attraction you don’t want to miss – unless of course, you’re afraid of dolls on strings.
