If you’ve been stuck for weeks on end sitting behind a computer or crammed into a tiny cubicle, San Diego is the type of place you dream about at night (or hell, even during the day): Beautiful weather, beautiful beaches, and beautiful people. What you probably didn’t know, is that San Diego is also a place that can give you nightmares. In fact, San Diego is home to the number one most haunted house in all of America. Creepy.
Ghosts in the Golden State?
A California state historical landmark, the Whaley House was constructed in 1857 by Thomas Whaley on the former site of the public gallows. A classic example of mid-nineteenth century Greek Revival architecture, the two-story home was the first of its kind in San Diego and was built from bricks made in Whaley’s own brickyard. Over the years, the home housed a number of businesses including a theater, general store, granary, school, ballroom, billiard hall, and the County Court House.
The mystery surrounding the home dates back to 1871 when court documents and records were seized on the property. Then, in 1885, the daughter of Thomas and Anna Whaley committed suicide in the home. Since opening as a museum in 1960, countless publications and books have discussed the alleged hauntings of the Whaley House which was recently hailed as one of the most terrifying places in America by the Travel Channel. Despite the hauntings, people can’t get enough of the place. According to Save our Heritage Organization which manages and operates the museum, over 100,000 visitors from all across the globe visit the Whaley House each year.
