Car sharing is a membership based automobile time share service. Members of a car sharing organization are allowed to use the provider's automobiles when they desire, with payment for service based on how often and how far they drive. Car sharing is also known as public motor pooling and short term car rental. The concept began in 1987 in Switzerland and was introduced in North America in 1993.
Car sharing provides flexible automotive transportation for an urban lifestyle. It enables convenient access to a network of cars throughout a city, 24 hours-a-day, without commitment or inconvenience. Faster than standard renting and as easy as hailing a cab, it is also surprisingly affordable when compared to the cost of owning and maintaining a personal vehicle.
