Family home movies of memorable events or movies shot to document important milestones in one's life are things most people have done with their own home video cameras. So what if you are ready to take it to the next level?  You’d like a much more professionally produced video or even one's own story or script put on film.  To move to the next level of film producing will require better quality equipment.  This does not necessarily mean using the film cameras used in Hollywood, but starting with a good, basic, high quality camera is a must.  Purchasing professional grade new camera equipment starts around $17,500 for just the camera body.  Even better, high quality video and film set models can go to $150,000 or higher for a full camera package.  This can become especially pricey for a newcomer to the film industry or for someone who just wants to indulge their love for the genre and explore a new hobby.

Audio Equipment, Mixers, Wireless Microphone Rentals

When developing a budget for film making, audio equipment is a very important factor.  Choosing the right equipment on how the audio will be transmitted can determine the quality of the movie.  One simple, highly used choice is the wireless microphone. This microphones is simple and lightweight and can be positioned anywhere you need to pick up dialogue or sound.  These are typically attached to a boom pole.  The boom is the long extendable pole that is used to suspend the microphone near the source of audio to be recorded. Sometimes the boom is mounted to self standing support but is usually held by a "boom operator."  After recording the audio for the movie, a mixer can then be used.  In professional audio, an audio mixer, or sound board, is an electronic device for combining routing and changing the level and/or dynamics of audio signals.  In film, mixing consoles are used in post-production.

Besides choosing the proper audio equipment, it may be even more important to choose the right movie camera for your filming.  With so many different choices, the right movie equipment can bring your filming up from the regular everyday to professional status.  Typically, a single camera, either motion picture or professional video camera, is used on the set.  Each shot to make up a scene is taken individually.  An alternative production method is the multiple-camera setup.  This method uses two or more cameras running simultaneously and the film scene is run through from start to finish with minimal interruption. Whichever method you use, you must still decide which type of camera will be used. HD cameras are just one choice you can make.  High-definition (HD) cameras are steadily becoming available from different manufacturers. HD camcorders offer a wider range of colors, higher resolutions and better compression, allowing even amateur users to create professional quality movies.  3D is another filming choice.  A 3-D camera imitates the function of a pair of human eyes. Instead of having only one lens to process the scene being shot, a 3-D production requires two identical cameras combined as one camera to simultaneously record the scene.  3D enhances the illusion of depth perception but when viewing the film special eyewear must be worn or you must have special projective hardware.  There are many manufacturers who produce both HD and 3D cameras.  The RED One starts at $17,500 for just the camera body only or the RED Epic which starts runs around $58,000.  Sony also prodces the F23 which is comparable to the RED One and a F65 CineAlta, like the RED Epic, which can run $150,000 for a full package.  Purchasing any of the cameras can really put a dent into your film making budget.

Camera Lens Rental, Filters And Lens Adapter For Rent

Once you have determined the appropriate camera for your project, you will want to look at accessories that can be used to achieve the film quality of film you desire.  There are several different lenses, filters and adapters that can be used.  Camera lenses and video lenses are optical devices that attach to video cameras used in machine vision, quality assurance, and remote monitoring applications. You can permanently fix the lenses to your video cameras, or use interchangeably with lenses of different focal lengths. There are several basic types of lenses depending on your filming needs.  Four basic ones are aspheric, pinhole, close-up, and wide angles.  Each one provides different filming angles, focuses, and lengths.  Lens filters effect the amount of and what kind of light that enters the camera as you film.  Make sure to determine if your camera needs a lens tube and if so what size, then you can determine the right size and style needed to achieve the filming effects you desire. Next is a lens adapter.  This is a lens that mounts on the end of your camera lens. Some are wide angle adaptors (0.75x is an example) and some are multipliers (1.5x or 2x) which move you half the distance to the subject you are shooting.  Once again, all lenses, filters and adapters are chosen depending on what subjects you are filming and what effects and quality you are trying to achieve.

Professional Lighting, Rigging Rentals

After the camera and accessories have been selected, there are still more options that can enhance your project.  Lighting and rigging and several other categories used in the filming industry are in this category. It is important to realize that proper professional lights can easily cost from $200 to as much as $1,000 for each light.  When filming, if you are just trying to light up people in natural daylight the usage of additional lighting will be minimum. If you are trying to light up a room that is completely dark, more lighting will obviously be required.  Purchasing this kind and amount of lighting can quickly add up. Next, depending on how advanced your film will be,some rigging will be necessary.  Movie rigging consists of enormous amounts of winches, motors, pulleys, and electricity.  Sometimes multi tiered stages with platforms that might be 80 feet in the air and over 100 pounds of cables all have to be set up "perfectly" so that a button can be pushed to get whatever effect or scene is desired from this rigging.  Additional equipment also involves matte boxes, dollies, and jibs.  A matte box is a device that is used on the end of a lens to block the sun or other light in order to prevent glare.  A dolly is a wheeled platform with no handles and four wheels that the camera mounts to and then is ridden on top of rails to give scenes a special feel.  Jibs are also used in filming.  In cinematography, a jib is a boom device with a camera on one end and a counterweight on the other.  This keeps the camera balanced as it moves through an extended arc.  By using a jib, the camera can move vertically, horizontally, or a combination of both and give your film added angles.  To make the leap from everyday movie making style to a more high quality and substantive product can all be achieved by choosing the right filming equipment for your movie making needs.
